The table below lists basic Hypershade tasks, and describes how to do them:

 

To... Do this...
Choose a material or texture Drag it from Visor, the Outliner, or the Multilister into Hypershade. You can also select Materials in Hypershade, and click Show Upstream Connections.
Look at the shading network attached to a material Select the shading group, and click Show Upstream Connections. You can also use the right mouse button to select the same menu item.
See what inputs or outputs are available on a node Position the cursor on the right or left edge of a node, and use the right mouse button to display the menu.
Move a node Use the left mouse button to drag the node where you want it.
Move a group of nodes Select the nodes (using a marquee or Shift-click) and use the left mouse button to drag to the new location.
Remember a particular layout of nodes Select Bookmark > Create Bookmark.
Go back to a previous layout of nodes Use the Navigate buttons, or select Bookmarks > and the bookmark you want.
Re-layout all the nodes to look neat and tidy Select Graph > Re-layout Graph.
Remove all the nodes from the Work Area without deleting them Select Graph > Clear Hypershade.
Delete a node Select the node and press Backspace on your keyboard. Or, you can select the node and then select Edit > Delete.
Delete unused nodes Select Edit > Delete Unused Nodes.
Connect one node to another Use the right mouse button on the right edge of the source node, and select the output. Use the right mouse button to click on the destination node, and select the input attribute. You can also use the Connection Editor the way you did in previous versions.
See how two nodes are connected Move the cursor over the connection line. The source and destination (output and input) attributes are displayed.
Break a connection between two nodes Click the connection line and press Backspace or Delete.
Connect to a multi-attribute Use the Connection Editor.
Connect a single attribute of one node to one element of a triple attribute in another Use the Connection Editor.
Change one end of a connection Use the left mouse button and drag one end of the connection line to the desired new node. Select an attribute from the semi-Connection Editor that lists the possible connections.
See what kind of data is in a connection Different line colors indicate different data types. The colors are defined in Options > Customize UI > Colors.
Use a texture as a bump map Drag a material and a texture from Visor into Hypershade. Right click the texture's right side, and select outColor. A connection line appears, attached to the cursor. Use the right mouse button to click on the shading group's swatch, and then select bump map. The connection is made.
Make a displacement map Drag a material and a texture from Visor into Hypershade. Right click the texture's right side, and select outColor. A connection line appears, attached to the cursor. Use the right mouse button to click on the shading group's swatch, and then select displacement map. The Connection Editor appears, in which you can make the connections.
Add a volume material to a shading group Drag a material and a texture from Visor into Hypershade. Right click the texture's right side, and select outColor. A connection line appears, attached to the cursor. Use the right mouse button to click on the shading group's swatch, and then select volume map. The connection is made.
See what objects are using this shader Use the right mouse button on the shading group and select Select Objects With Material.
Assign a shading group to one or more objects Drag the shading group node onto the object in the IPR, the view, or the Outliner.
Duplicate a node Select the node, then select Edit > Duplicate > Without Network.
Duplicate an entire shading network Select the node, then select Edit > Duplicate > Shading Network.
Duplicate a node, allowing it to share a shading network with its source Select the node, then select Edit > Duplicate > With Connections to Network.
Create a new material or texture Drag the node from Visor into the Hypershade window. Or, in Hypershade, select Create > and select the node you want to create.
Browse my image files on disk or in my libraries Use Visor to do this.
Edit the properties of a node Position the cursor over the node, and use the right mouse button to select Attribute Editor.
Expand the field of view to see more nodes Press Alt and use the right and middle mouse buttons to dolly in and out.
Create user-defined icons for Hypershade Click on the button the tool bar to enter Snapshot mode. Drag out a marquee or use the view tools to move the marquee about. Drag and drop to attach the snapshot to an icon in Hypershade or Visor.
